-Previously unpublished manuscripts of fiction, non-fiction, poetry or hybrid forms, written in English, between 16 and 28 pages for prose and 20 to 30 pages for poetry (excluding front matter). No more than one story or poem per page. Please send cohesive and focused collections of work.
-Individual pieces may be previously published, but the manuscript as a whole must be unpublished. We’ll find out if otherwise and be really pissed. Please do not include any artwork. If your illustrations are on point and you really really want to include them, write us a note and if we select your manuscript, we’ll talk.
-Writers of color and writers from the LGBTQ+ communities are highly encouraged to submit.
-If your manuscript is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise demeaning to a group of people, please don’t send it to us. Or anyone.
-A cover page with the title, your name, email address and phone number. Please don’t include your name anywhere else on the manuscript.
-The title and page numbers on each page.
-A table of contents
-An acknowledgements page if any pieces have been previously published.
-Pay the sliding scale submission fee of $1 to $20 at the bottom of this page (see “Fees” below)
-Please email your submissions to brokenlegbooks [at] gmail [dot] com. Include your genre, name, and title in the subject line (ex. Subj: Fiction – Gonzales – The Things I Say In The Dark). In the body of your submission, please indicate that you have paid your submission fee.
We didn’t get into to get rich. Unfortunately, as much as we want to be a cash-free organization, cover art, domain names, and webhosting cost money. Because of this, we’re offsetting our out-of-pocket costs with submission fees (boo, hiss, we know). But, in order to not price any voices out of submitting, we offer a sliding scale for our fee.
Please pay what you are able to, anywhere between $1 and $20 (or more, if you are so inclined).
Note: All money raised goes back into Broken Leg Books. The more you can give, the more submissions we can take from those less fortunate AND the more we can give back to our authors.
